Over the years Domke have been know for manufacturing bags with very little or even no padding at all! The idea behind this was to keep the overall weight of the bag to a minimum as the last thing any photographer wanted was a heavy bag before the gear was loaded into it! Domke’s answer to padding was creating a patented padded insert system which would allow the photographer the option to move things around within the stitched wall compartments provided.
The only down side to this was that lenses & DSLR bodies were changing rapidly as years went on. And so became the need for moving the inside walls to cope with lenses that had a larger circumference area, DSLR bodies with attachments or simply creating a tier’d system for having the camera higher up in the bag to access more quickly.
The great news is that as of last year, ALL inserts that have 2 or more compartments now feature interchangeable velcro inner walls so you can set the inside of your bag how you want it to look and store your equipment. So if you have the older style stitched inserts why not upgrade the way your bag works inside today!

Fantastic versatility. I’ve change the layout of the four compartments in the F-810 Satchel to make it a perfect housing for my Elinchrom Quadra system. Will have to make a blog post shortly
I’ve always loved my Domke bags. I had an F-3X (I’m petrty sure) about 15 years ago, but I ended up giving it to a friend. I still have a black canvas F-2 that I’ve been using since about the same time. Awesome bag. I have a black F-6 that’s been getting a lot of use lately, when I want to travel lighter (and I also have a Mountainsmith Cairn that I use a lot). Great stuff.
